When Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel resigned, everybody in South Block thought that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will appoint his favourite civil servant Hasmukh Adhia as the new RBI chief. But Shaktikanta Das was appointed instead of Adhia. Adhia, former Finance Secretary, superannuated on November 30, 2018. North Block insiders informed gfiles that Adhia had informed the Prime Minister’s Office long ago that he is not interested in any post retirement job. It is learnt that Prime Minister Office offered him the post of Comptroller and Auditor General of India and Shaktikanta Das would have been appointed as Governor of some state. But Adhia declined. Why did he take such a decision when he was the most sought after civil servant of India. It is learnt that after a demise of a loved one in the family, Adhia was not in cheerful mood. He wanted to resign a year ago but was persuaded by well wishers to continue till superannuation. Adhia is planning to go back to Ahmedabad and pursue his love for yoga.
