The Liberal Party has won the Canadian elections, and incumbent Mike Carney will continue as Prime Minister. Citizens are hopeful about his ability to manage relations with the United States amid discussions of annexation and tariff issues.
Conservative Poilievre who was riding the crest of popularity before Trump’s tariffs is unsated.
The Canadian elections were timely. When the nation’s sentiments went patriotic and the way the Liberal Party conducted itself against US President Donald Trump’s annexation threats as the country to become the 51st state of America and amid the tariff wars.
The change of leadership from Trudeau, whose popularity was sagging against conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who was riding high, helped the liberals as nationalism, patriotism and the spirit to stand united against a mighty United States and its erratic leader fuelled the wave and sentiment in the elections that enabled the Liberals to retain power.
In a stunning reverse, post Trump annexation threats and trade war, fortunes swung dramatically in favour of the Liberals as it stood up to the onslaught of tariffs by boycotting US goods and slapping equally high tariffs on US goods. Canada was accused to allowing the smuggling of humans and the deadly drug Fentanyl into the US by Trump, while facts showed that Canada accounted for only 0ne per cent of the overall Fentanyl smuggling and that Mexico was the main culprit which was importing from China and India the precursor chemicals to nix and make the deadly Cocktail of Fentanyl mixed Cocaine to draw a 100,000 youths to death every year like a candle flame draws a moth to its fiery end.

How Canada’s election night unfolded – Here is how it happened – Now What Next?
The Liberal Party led by its PM Mike Carney won a fourth successive mandate in Canada, staging an unexpected comeback. In his victory speech, Prime Minister Mark Carney vowed to stand up to the US, which he accused of trying to “break” Canada.
Carney is a relative political newcomer, having replaced Justin Trudeau as leader of the Liberals two months ago. It must be said to the credit of Trudeau that as long as he was in power he stood up magnificently to the mighty Trump and opposed the US tariffs and rebutted all criticisms of its country of being a route for smuggling Fentanyl into the US as also human trafficking.
Not only did Trudeau regain much of his lost popularity and prestige but build a solid base for his successor, a relative newcomer and a bureaucrat finance man, to lead the party successfully at the hustings riding on the wave of popular sentiments and a sense of nationalism to keep Canada and its citizens united against an oppressive US in their perspective.
Even though the US President Trump’s 25% tariffs against Canada, China and Mexico , the major trading partners, was only meant to be a bargaining chip to achieve new tariffs, the rise of nationalism was enabled by Trump to get the Liberals to retain power, though there were earlier threats from the conservatives that they would unseat the liberals. Pierre Poilievre, the Conservative leader who had high ratings prior to Trump’s tariffs, lost his seat as MP. This event affected his plans to become the next Premier after defeating Justin Trudeau.
The October elections were advanced, resulting in a Liberal win. So, what happens next? How will Canada’s relationship shape up with the US, India with whom its ties were strained during Justin Trudeau’s time? Will Mike Carney patch up with India and negotiate with the US on tariffs as Trump has mellowed down and seems to be in a mood of reconciliation with China, Canada, Mexico and others. As the people’s sentiments are turning the tide against Trump following rising prices of essentials – eggs, a staple diet from 2$ to 9$- gas prices up, groceries up, approximately 60% of the American feels Trump has got his Economics wrong.
This could cost the Republicans heavily in the mid terms of November when the Congress goes to elections, if the trend was not reversed – democrats could seize power. As its margin of power is narrow in the Congress – 220 to 215. If there is a wave against rising prices, the GOP could lose the house and passing legislations on immigration, sacking people from government jobs, and facing courts, could become a nightmare.
Though the Republicans have a comfortable majority in the Senate at 57 to 43.
Now let’s turn to Mike Carney, what’s his plot after having ousted the conservatives from popularity. What’s his next move against trading partners and moves in the geopolitical situation?
Canadian media called the election for the Liberals shortly after polls closed nationally at 22:00 EDT (03:00 BST) on Monday, projecting that Mark Carney’s Liberal Party was on its way to win enough seats in the House of Commons to form a government.
Federal election officials are required to count ballots by hand in front of witnesses. Ballots are tallied only after polls close in each location where the votes were cast.
These projections are based on initial results from Elections Canada, which runs the country’s federal elections. Officials double-check vote totals after the election.
Is Mark Carney already the prime minister?
Liberal leader Mark Carney does not need to be sworn in again as prime minister. Instead, he will continue doing his job, along with his Cabinet ministers.
Should Carney decide to reshuffle his Cabinet, there will be a ceremony with the governor general, but until then, the ministers stay in their posts. Carney may indeed choose to shuffle his Cabinet after bringing in a team when he became prime minister last month.
When Parliament reconvenes after an election, expect the swearing-in of members and the election of the Speaker. There will also be a Speech from the Throne, which opens every new session of Parliament and allows a government to introduce its goals and priorities.
Do the Liberals have a majority government?
No. Around 16:00 EDT (21:00 BST) on Tuesday the CBC projected Liberals would fall three seats short of the 172 needed for a majority in the House of Commons.
The Liberals are likely to establish a minority government with Carney as prime minister. They will have to strike deals with the other parties to survive no-confidence votes and pass legislation in Parliament.
The Bloc Québécois and the NDP could play a role here, as they can help the Liberals pass their legislation.
Bloc Québécois leader Yves-Francois Blanchet suggested Carney may benefit from a brief period of stability with the help of other parties. Blanchet urged a “truce” among parties while Canada negotiated trade with the US president, saying Canadians wanted stability in unstable times.
He said he does not see any scenario “other than collaboration for a period of slightly over a year”. The Conservatives are on track to form the Official Opposition once again.t
What has Carney said he will do as PM?
One of his priorities is to navigate the relationship with US President Donald Trump. When the pair spoke in late March, Carney and Trump agreed they would begin negotiations about a new economic and security relationship right after the election.
When Parliament returns, it’s possible we see the Liberals quickly introduce legislation focused on securing Canada’s economy in the face of US tariff headwinds.
Five things Carney has pledged to do as Canadian PM
That could include a promised tax cut for lower- and middle-class Canadians, and moving ahead with a “one project, one review” process to speed up approval for key energy and mining proposals.
The Liberals have said they want to make Canada a “clean and conventional energy” superpower. They also committed to putting C$5bn into a trade diversification fund.
The new government also will need to focus on the June G7 summit, which Canada is hosting in Alberta. Will Canada invite India to the G7 summit as it has to iron out differences with the latter over perceived threats and baseless reports of Indian external intelligence having killed a Canadian Sikh citizen, who was preaching separatism in the state of Punjab in India, a direct threat and intervention in the sovereignty of India.

India has opposed the Khalistan Liberation movement in Canada, led by the Khalistan Tiger Force, as it disrupts peace in Punjab, currently governed by Chief Minister Balwant Mann of the Aam Admi Party.
How Canadians reacted to the election result across the country
Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre made significant inroads with the party’s vote share, securing approximately 41% of the vote, according to Election Canada. That would be the highest the party has won in decades.
They are expected to have 144 seats, up from 120 at dissolution when the election was called. But there are some bitter pills to swallow – Poilievre himself is projected to have lost his seat in Ontario.

And with voters switching from NDP and the Bloc mostly to the Liberals, those expanded Conservative numbers weren’t enough to win. This will be a tough loss for them, being in such a strong position only a few months ago when they had a clear path to victory.
They will now need to figure out a way forward after a series of electoral defeats. And it is hard to see Poilievre staying on at the helm, which would mean a fourth leader since the Liberals swept the 2015 election.
There is as yet no news from US or India on the election results in Canada. US would view it as a defeat for its aggressive policies against Canada with what they consider irresponsible statements as Canada can become the 51st state if it wants to avoid tariffs, India will have to contend with allegations that it was allowing its external intelligence agency RAW – Research and Analysis Wing to operate on its soil and had killed a Sikh terrorists , proclaimed Canadian citizens (whose citizenship was obtained through fraud and chicanery per Indian govt officials) and threats to a prominent Sikh leader Pannun, yet another US/Canadian activist.
Gurpatwant Singh Pannun is an American and Canadian political activist and lawyer who is one of the main leaders of the Khalistan movement. He is also the legal advisor and spokesperson for Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), which aims to promote the creation of Khalistan as a separate Sikh state.
Designated as a terrorist by the government of India in 2020, in 2023 he was the subject of an attempted assassination, believed to be linked to India by the United States. He has denied the accusations and says he is persecuted for his separatist beliefs.
Will Mike Carney pursue Justin Trudeau’s path or take a new approach? It’s quite unlikely that Carney will take confrontationist approach with India on the Pannun issue. Rather soft pedal it. Canada would like to promote trade with India in the current situation of a trade war with US. So,
it’s likely that Carney would seek a meeting with Indian premier Narendra Modi shortly and that a reproachment would following.
Highly likely Carney will invite Indian premier Narendra Modi to attend the G7 summit in June in Canada so that they can meet face to face and sort out the differences as also forge a new alliance on trade.
India will also have an opportunity to meet European leaders from UK, France, Germany, Italy, to discuss trade prospects in the changed scenario of Trump tariffs and maintaining the geopolitical balance in the Asian region with the new Pakistan inspired attacks on Pahalgam in Kashmir in which 26 innocent tourists were killed by four terrorists , claimed to be an offshoot of the LeT –Laskhar e Taiba , a declared terrorist outfit. India will seek the support of EU and Canada in fighting terrorism on its soil sponsored by one of its neighbours and the hegemonistic tendencies of another hostile neighbour.
Perfect scenario for all – The G7 summit in June in Canada – EU, India, and others.
