UNION Minister for Health and Family Welfare JP Nadda is surprised and perturbed over the activities of the Medical Council of India (MCI). The MCI is the prime institution for regulating medical education in India and it is under the jurisdiction of his Ministry. It has been embroiled in controversies due to its monopolist activities and the controversial former president, Ketan Desai. Dr Desai was booked in five cases by the CBI, including possession of disproportionate property, though later the probe agency gave a clean chit to him. Why the CBI dropped charges is a matter of investigation. It’s a long story how and when Dr Desai was arrested on the allegations of taking a bribe. Dr Jayshreeben Mehta now heads MCI and is also from Gujarat. Nadda and the Secretary Health, Bhanu Pratap Sharma, a 1981-batch IAS officer of the Bihar cadre, are aware of Dr Desai’s clout. Sources disclose Dr Desai is still in command and controls MCI through his protégé, Dr Mehta. It’s widely known in Delhi that MCI’s dubious activities are allegedly masterminded from a five-star hotel in Connaught Place. It is obvious Dr Desai can’t operate without the backing of powers within the ruling dispensation. Nadda and the Health Secretary are aware of Dr Desai’s clout within the BJP and both are remaining silent.
